Founder & Lead Author, AI Tool Radar
Self-employed since 2013 as a photo designer, media designer, and IT-focused developer based in Herne, Germany. Founder of AI Tool Radar. Researches and writes the guides on this site personally.
From media design to AI tool evaluation
Roland has been self-employed since 2013 — originally as a photo designer and media designer with a strong IT background. Working for small German businesses, the practice gradually moved into web development: first sites built with page builders and WordPress, later custom-built SaaS applications. That middle-tier position is also where AI tools earn or lose their keep: the budgets are real, the time is tight, and a tool that wastes either gets dropped fast.
Today Roland maintains several production platforms for clients, including a property-management system used by a real-estate administrator, a mobile field-report app for technicians on-site, a custom CRM and contact pipeline for a specialty manufacturer, and a client intake and lead-tracking system for an independent automotive damage assessor.
AI tools became part of this day-to-day work: Copilot in the editor, ChatGPT for spec review, Claude for long-form refactors, specialized writers for client content, image generators for mockups. Not every tool in the directory has been used by him for months on end — AI Tool Radar focuses on structured research and well-sourced guides, with firsthand testing where it carries the verdict.
AI Tool Radar launched in early 2026 because the English-language review landscape had an obvious problem: most of the coverage was written by people who had not actually used the tools, or had been paid not to say anything negative. The goal of this site is to be the place a busy professional can land on, read one guide, and make a confident decision.
