The short version#
OpenAI rolled out the GPT-6 family in September 2026: GPT-6 Astra on September 3, GPT-6 Sol and Luna on September 22, and GPT-6.1 Sol on September 29 at DevDay. Subscription prices did not change. What changed is which plan gets which model. As of September 30, 2026, OpenAI's pricing page for the EU lists:

The biggest caveat is in OpenAI's own announcements: GPT-6 Sol, Luna and GPT-6.1 Sol currently run in ChatGPT Work and Codex, and are not yet available in regular chat (OpenAI, Sep 22, OpenAI, Sep 29). If you upgrade to Plus to chat with GPT-6 in the normal chat window, you will keep getting the GPT-5.6 models there for now.
I checked every price on September 30, 2026 on OpenAI's German and English pricing pages. Visitors from the EU see euro prices on both. Prices change, so confirm on chatgpt.com/pricing before you buy.
What changed with GPT-6#
OpenAI tiers the GPT-6 family by capability and price:
- GPT-6 Astra is, according to OpenAI, the strongest model in the family. It launched for a limited number of organizations first, with Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise to follow. Pro, Business and Enterprise also get GPT-6 Astra Pro (OpenAI, Sep 3).
- GPT-6 Sol is the middle tier, upgraded to GPT-6.1 Sol on September 29. OpenAI positions it close to Astra at one fifth of Astra's API price.
- GPT-6 Luna is the fast, low-cost model.
Two details matter when you pick a plan:
- The localized pricing pages lag behind. On September 30 the German page still listed "reasoning models with GPT-5.6" for Plus, while the English page already said "Advanced reasoning models with GPT-6". The English page also lists three usage tiers for Pro, Pro reasoning powered by GPT-6 Astra, and Dot, OpenAI's new always-on agent.
- Free and Go: conflicting information. The September 22 announcement says Free and Go users can access GPT-6 Luna in the desktop app. The pricing page comparison table does not list GPT-6 for either plan. Don't count on it.
Free: what you get at no cost#
The free plan offers unlimited text chats with GPT-5.6 Luna, "subject to abuse guardrails". Messages with uploads, image creation, voice, deep research, memory, and access to Codex and ChatGPT Work (desktop only) are limited.
The context window for instant answers is 27,000 tokens, roughly 12 pages of text as maximum input according to OpenAI. Enough for a short contract draft, not for a 40-page proposal with appendices.
Go at €8: cheap, but with ads#
Go expands uploads, images, voice and memory, and doubles the instant context window to 54,000 tokens (about 40 pages). Two things are stated right on the pricing page: the plan may include ads, and the comparison table does not include GPT-6. Projects, scheduled tasks and custom GPTs start at Plus.
Go fits personal or side use when you need more uploads. For client work, ads in the interface are not a great signal, and the missing projects feature gets in the way quickly.
Plus at €23: the default for freelancers#
Plus is where the math flips for most professionals. According to the pricing page it includes:
- Advanced reasoning models with GPT-6, and limited access to GPT-6 Astra, Sol and Luna
- Projects, scheduled tasks and custom GPTs
- Expanded deep research, more uploads, better image creation
- ChatGPT Work on desktop, web and mobile, expanded Codex usage
- Context window: 54,000 tokens for instant answers, 256,000 tokens for reasoning (about 320 pages)
Usage limits apply. If you spend hours a day in Codex or long research runs, you will hit them. For writing, proposals, email, research and occasional automation, Plus is enough.
Pro from €103: for heavy Codex users and agents#
Pro starts at €103 per month. The English page describes three usage tiers (the German page: 5x or 20x the usage of Plus), plus Pro reasoning, longer Codex and Work sessions, unlimited image creation, the largest context windows (128,000 tokens instant, 400,000 tokens reasoning) and the new dots.
With GPT-6.1 Sol, OpenAI also announced a new Pro tier at $500 per month. It carries the highest limits and the Ultrafast variants, GPT-6 Astra Ultrafast and GPT-6.1 Sol Ultrafast, in ChatGPT Work and Codex, which OpenAI says run up to eight times faster than Astra (OpenAI, Sep 29).
Dots are, per OpenAI, always-on agents built on GPT-6 Astra, with their own cloud computer and browser, connectable to more than 4,000 apps through plugins. They are rolling out gradually to Pro, Business Premium and Enterprise "in eligible markets" (OpenAI, Sep 29). The announcement does not say which markets.
Pro only pays off if you regularly hit Plus limits. At €103 it costs about 4.5 times Plus; it earns that back through saved hours, not through better everyday answers.
Business: €21 or €105 per seat#
For teams, ChatGPT Business offers two seat types that can be mixed (OpenAI Business pricing):

Business covers teams of 2 to 200 people. Three points matter more than the price:
- No training on your business data by default. On Free, Go, Plus and Pro, content is used for training per the pricing page, with an opt-out.
- SAML, SSO and MFA, centralized billing and spend controls.
- Connectors to Google Workspace, Slack, GitHub, Microsoft 365 and more.
If you handle client data, Business is a much safer setup than several Plus accounts.
For developers: GPT-6 API prices#
If you use the API instead of a subscription, you pay per million tokens. Per OpenAI (as of September 29, 2026):

OpenAI says Sol and Luna are 50% cheaper than the GPT-5.6 launch prices. For automations that reuse context, GPT-6.1 Sol's cached input price makes the biggest difference.
For freelancers and small teams in the DACH region#
Three points are specific to Germany, Austria and Switzerland. Go, Plus, Pro and Business are paid by credit card; invoicing only comes with Enterprise. Which plan for whom?#
- You use ChatGPT a few times a week: Free is enough.
- You freelance and use ChatGPT daily for writing, proposals and research: Plus at €23. Compare it with Claude before you commit, see Claude Pro vs ChatGPT Plus.
- You code a lot with Codex or want agents running: Pro, but only once you hit Plus limits.
- You are a team handling client data: Business Standard, with Premium seats for heavy users.
- Go only makes sense if ads don't bother you and you don't need projects.
FAQ#
Is a ChatGPT subscription worth it?#
For professional use, usually yes: Plus adds projects, custom GPTs and reasoning models, a context window twice as large for instant answers, and 256,000 tokens for reasoning over long documents. If you only ask occasional text questions, Free is enough.
How much can I use ChatGPT for free?#
Text chats on the Free plan are unlimited per OpenAI, subject to abuse guardrails. Uploads, images, voice and deep research are limited.
Can I use GPT-6 for free?#
OpenAI's announcement says Free users get GPT-6 Luna in the desktop app, but the pricing page does not list GPT-6 for Free. GPT-6 is reliably included from Plus upward, and even there only in ChatGPT Work and Codex for now, not in regular chat.
What does ChatGPT cost for businesses?#
ChatGPT Business costs €21 per Standard seat and €105 per Premium seat per month, for teams of two or more. Enterprise pricing is available on request.
